We're Celebrating National Coffee Week!

It's National Coffee Week, but we at Hodorowski Homes celebrate this wonderful beverage every week, every day of the year! Whether it's flavored, hot, cold, with cream and sugar or just black, we drink a lot of the stuff.

Jennifer, our Service Manager loves Pumpkin Spice from Dunkin Donuts.

When we're able to leave the office, the Capital Region offers a number of great coffee roasters and purveyors.  Some of our favorites are Civitello's on Jay Street in Schenectady.  While known for their great Italian pastry, it's also a good spot for a traditional espresso or cappuccino.

Also in Schenectady, and right next to our J. Luke Buildings of 245 and 242 Broadway is Villa Italia.  Family owned and known for great pastry and gelato, you can also sip espresso after a show at Proctor's Theater.

In Troy, there is Superior Merchandise Company, specializing in pour-over coffee, or Little Peck's, featuring Tandem Coffee Roasters and an eclectic interior with a pink espresso maker!

Whether sipping at our desks, or out and about, we at Hodorowski Homes love our coffee and we happily celebrate it this week.

Golfing with a Mission

Last week, the Hodorowski Group took part of a golf fundraiser at the Mohawk Country Club for an organization we cherish and support called Schenectady Works, a branch of the City Mission of Schenectady. Back in 2013, J. Luke Construction, the commercial division of the Hodorowski Group, built the new Schenectady Works building, and we continue to partner and support both organizations. This year, the golf tournament raised over $30,000 which will benefit Schenectady Works and its mission

Nathan Mandsager, Director of Schenectady Works and Coordinator of Schenectady Bridges, spoke to us recently about the event. “Schenectady Works is a program of the City Mission, focused on empowering employment. Our goal is to equip businesses and employees with innovative solutions that assist with job training, retention, and career advancement.” Fundraisers like 'Golf with a Mission' play a huge role in the organization’s growth. “Our programs include a Career Training Center, social enterprises, Employer Resource Network, and Drive to Success Transportation Solution.”

Some of the career opportunities that men and women have had that recently graduated from the Schenectady Works program are certified nursing assistant at Albany Medical Center, Home Health Aide for Kingsway Communities, Ambassador for Schenectady Ambassadors through the City Mission, Dishwasher for Apertivo restaurant, and other occupations such as drivers, landscaping and maintenance. “If you are a business leader or connected to the business community, and you are looking for innovative ways to improve employee retention, productivity, and culture, some of our services can help in these endeavors” says Mandsager.

You don’t need to be a business owner to help, there are many other ways for you to get involved by volunteering or donating to Schenectady Works. “Schenectady Works programs utilize volunteers in Career Training Center as employment and career coaches and in Drive to Success as drivers and navigators. Many of our social enterprises depend on the ongoing investment of individuals and organizations to supplement the service contracts we have.”

Nathan has been serving as Director of Schenectady Works since 2012.

Popular House Trends for Baby Boomers

Here at the Hodorowski Group, we are noticing a rising trend in the types of houses and communities we are building that are more geared toward Baby Boomers, or, those born between the years of 1946-1964. Many of these Boomers are looking for convenient independent housing and are not at all ready to move into a retirement home. We wanted to share with you some of our senior-friendly house designs and a brand new community we recently finished building that are more popular with the Baby Boomers.

Homes with first floor Master Bedrooms: According to National Association of Home Builders, "more than 40% of new homes have Master Suites downstairs, a 15% increase over a decade ago. Boomers not wishing to go up and down stairs... helped fuel this trend. The bedrooms also are also larger, with more spacious walk-in closets and bathrooms that have a separate tub and shower and dual sinks."  (NAHB) We offer a number if different house designs with a first floor Master Suite. Some of our more recently built houses that follow this trend is the 'Ashley', 'Biltmore' and 'McKinley.' Other designs include the 'Brighton', 'Taylor', 'Buchanan' and the 'Tyler' designs.

Downsizing to a one story design: Another trend we are seeing with Baby Boomers is downsizing to a smaller one-story or ranch house. "A smaller home sometimes means less maintenance, less work and less worry." says a recent article from U.S.News, "... and a lot of them, suffering from bad ankles, bad knees and bad hips, are opting for one-story housing." In the past year we have built a number of different ranches in several different communities including The Preserves, Sandy Rock Estates and Traver's Meadow. The more popular one story house designs we've built are the Stanton, Aqueduct, and Cleverdale. Other ranch designs include the Camden, Cleveland, Franklin Pierce, and Covington.

Age restricted apartment living:  Then there are the Baby Boomers that take downsizing to another level and move to an age restricted community or senior apartment living.  These Boomers are looking for the quality of independent living but with the convenience of not needing to maintain a house or property. The Hodorowski Group recently finished building a 110 unit senior apartment building called Glenwyck Manor, in Glenville, New York with amenities included like a fitness center, indoor pool, community center, and spa. There are about 80 units available to rent still in either a one or two-bedroom option. For more information on Glenwyck Manor, visit www.MeadowsAtGlenwyck.com. If Glenville isn't the area for you, we are also starting phase I of construction of a similar community in Wilton, New York.

In-law apartments: One final trend we are seeing in the houses we build, is the rising popularity of in-law apartments attached to the main house of a home. We offer several options for those looking to build a brand new home, with the convenience of having Mom and Dad next door. You can read more about the In-Law options we have, and see some of the designed we've built here.
This 'Helmond' has a custom built in-law apartment attached.

We'd love to know, if you are a Baby Boomer, what something that look for in a home or community?

A Mission Close to Our Heart

With the holidays right around the corner, it seems now, more than ever, there are opportunities to give to those in need. One particular organization that we support year-round is very close to our hearts and our community, and that is the City Mission of Schenectady. City Mission is a non-profit organization that "exists to meet the needs of the hungry and homeless in our community" through their three branches of service. City Mission is non-government funded organization depending entirely on the contributions of concerned individuals, churches and businesses.

One of the ways which Hodorowski Homes give back to our community is by serving a meal every other month in their dining center.  Many of us at Hodorowski Homes volunteered to serve there yesterday. We believe it's very important to give back to our community not just around the holidays, but the whole year round.

We love being a part of the City Mission and serving the Community Meal is our expression of that. If you are interested in volunteering or donating to the city mission, please visit their website.
