Island Fever

Homeowner after homeowner tells us that the kitchen is the most used room in the entire house. We get it all the time! Beyond that, the kitchen island is easily the most used element in the home.  It's a place where kids can eat their snacks and do homework; chefs can prepare and store their food; hosts can prepare and serve wonderful platters for parties. With the help of our homeowners and cabinet suppliers, we have designed and installed a number of islands in kitchens over the years.  Here are some of our favorites.

Kitchen trends come and go, whether it's the finish of the cabinet or the type of countertop being used. Painted cabinets with a glaze, a full-overlay door or stained wood to show off the grain are just a few choices a home buyer is faced with.  There are just as many choices for countertops, whether the preference is for natural stone in granite, marble or manufactured acrylic products like Corian. Another popular option is an engineered stone product that incorporates quartz; commonly known brand names are Cambria and Zodiac.

The size and shape of an island are often determined by the house layout and it's desired function in a kitchen. Questions like, 'how many stools do you plan on using?' are often a driving force behind the design. Angled, L-shaped, or rectangular islands are some of the most popular shapes we've seen.

For those who are not afraid of a little pop of color, every cabinet maker offers some great options.  Shades of green, blue, yellow and red can be found in most lines.  An island is a great way to introduce color, without overwhelming the palette.
