Memorial Day

Many people think of Memorial Day as an extension of a long holiday weekend to finish up their spring cleaning and opening their pool for the season. Although these are all very important tasks to accomplish before summer; Memorial Day is meant to be a day of remembrance of those fallen in the line of military duty serving our country.

According to USMemorialDay.org: “the first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states... The holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war."

As Memorial Day approaches you may be see many people wearing a poppy flower or seeing them sold in various places. The poppy flower became the official memorial flower of fallen veterans when in 1915 Moina Michael sold poppies to friends and family and gave the proceeds to benefit servicemen in need. Later, that effort was adopted by the VFW in 1922 and to this day the “Buddy Poppy” flowers are assembled by disabled veterans in VA hospitals. For more information about why poppies are a symbol of fallen Veterans visit the VFW website.

We would like to personally thank the men and women who are serving our country, and our thoughts and prayers are with those families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty.
